In 2005, the Supreme Court decided to set up a committee to implement measures that would curtail the unrest attributable to scholar elections, and introduce an age limit for the candidates contesting in the scholar elections. Following the Supreme Court order, the Ministry of Human Resource Development constituted a six-member panel headed by former Chief Election Commissioner J M Lyngdoh. Intellectual allies have defended the students towards unfair assaults, but haven’t helped them mirror on their largest mistakes.
