Audiences love a good horror flick. A terrifying movie or television show helps viewer ease their own anxieties over the uncertainties they face. It gives you hope that’s there’s a way to defeat any villain in your life, no matter how threatening.
That’s why writer Geoff Johns made a smart move by including the unbelievably eerie Eclipso in DC’s Stargirl.
Eclipso and DC’s Stargirl
Eclipso (voiced by three different actors in the series) comes from the Shadowlands, an alternate dimension containing dark shadows and the emptiness of humanity. Negative emotions fuel both Shadowlands and Eclipso. It’s his mission to cause sufficient strife and misery that would please Lucifer himself.
Trapped in a Black Diamond
Eclipso was trapped in the Black Diamond by natives living on a forgotten island in the Pacific Ocean. An explorer found the Black Diamond and came under Eclipso’s influence, eventually achieving fame and fortune before becoming an evil vessel for Eclipso. The Justice Society of America (JSA) eventually killed the explorer and Eclipso was once again trapped in the Black Diamond.
Released in DC’s Stargirl Season 2
Mean girl and high school teen Cindy Burman (played by Meg DeLacy) finds the diamond in Season 1. Eclipso then makes a terrifying appearance in Season 2 with the same terror that Freddy Krueger brought to A Nightmare on Elm Street.
Like the devil he is, Eclipso loves to tempt others into committing sins both small and great. He then shames them and pulls them into the Black Diamond, feeding on those negative emotions until there’s nothing left but a pile of ash.
Eclipso eventually tricks Stargirl Whitney Courtney (played by Brec Bassinger) into touching the Black Diamond with her Cosmic Staff. The diamond is shattered and Eclipso is released, appearing in his true, evil form.
He causes strife and intense pain until Courtney and her pals come together to turn Eclipso into a slice of toast with the help of a 5th-dimensional genie.
Eclipso and DC’s Stargirl Season 3
The subtitle for DC’s Stargirl Season 3 is Frenemies hinting that teen Courtney will likely have to form alliances with some of the bullies who’ve made her school time miserable. And a villain as frightening and evil as Eclipso is bound to return in some form in Season 3.
Amy Smart who plays Courtney’s mom Barbara has also hinted that Season 3 will be more of a whodunnit with plenty of twists and turns to make the series the fun show it is.
